More than adopters: the welfare impacts of farmer innovation in rural Ghana
Summary. Farmer-led innovation in rural Ghana significantly improves household income, consumption expenditure, and food security among innovating farmers. Using survey data and regression analysis, the study finds that innovation reduces food insecurity by increasing food spending and shortening hunger periods. However, innovation does not substantially improve dietary diversity. The welfare gains would vary if non-innovators adopted innovation, suggesting farmer innovation deserves promotion alongside external technologies for poverty reduction.
