Summary. This paper presents a methodology for designing off-grid renewable energy microgrids in rural developing communities without existing electricity access. The approach includes data collection, assessment, planning, and execution phases, emphasizing co-design with communities and creation of renewable energy cooperatives. The authors apply this methodology to a case study in Mumbeji, Zambia, presenting demand estimates, generation curves, resource availability, costs, and microgrid design results.
