Rural–urban divide in support for renewable energy policy: evidence from Nevada’s renewable portfolio standard ballot initiative in 2020

Summary. Rural Nevada precincts showed significantly lower support for a renewable portfolio standard ballot initiative than urban precincts in 2020, even after accounting for political affiliation and proximity to renewable energy projects. The findings reveal a persistent rural-urban divide in renewable energy policy support that existing explanations do not adequately address, suggesting rural residents may have distinct concerns about government-mandated renewable energy development.
