Sustainability of Off-Grid Photovoltaic Systems for Rural Electrification in Developing Countries: A Review
Summary. Off-grid solar systems can electrify rural areas in developing countries, but institutional, economic, environmental, and socio-cultural barriers threaten their long-term success. Weak institutions, inadequate subsidy schemes, poor environmental oversight, and limited social acceptance undermine sustainability. The review identifies these multidimensional challenges to help stakeholders design more durable rural electrification programs.
