Innovation in Rural Health Services Requires Local Actors and Local Action

Summary. Rural communities can lead, own, and sustain health service innovations, but research documenting local actors and local action remains scarce. The authors analyzed 32 studies of health innovation projects and found that while rural communities demonstrate capacity to drive change in service design and delivery, current evidence provides little insight into how local actors actually produce improvements. The paper calls for better study designs to capture and understand community-led innovation in rural health settings.
